PRAGMA ND

Pragma ND is a sans serif typeface with calligraphic features. Its vital rhythm facilitates the reading of long texts. It also has an “authentic” italic imitating the movement of handwriting. Its high legibility makes it an ideal typeface for long texts in both analog and digital contexts.

ABOUT

Pragma ND was designed between 1992 and 1995 by Christopher Burke. Forsaking the smoothness and modularity of most sanserif typefaces, its letterforms derive from the trinity of elements in conventional old-face types with serifs: capital letters based on Roman inscriptional models; small letters derived from humanistic writing; and a truly cursive italic. A new light weight has been added to complete the family.

Christopher Burke (born in England 1967) is a typographer & typeface designer and a writer on modern typographic history. He worked at Monotype Typography in the UK, before studying for a PhD in Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (England), which he obtained in 1995. From 1996 to 2001 he taught at the University of Reading, where he planned and conceived the MA in typeface design. He is also the author of Paul Renner: The Art of Typography (1998).
